Steve Ditko letter posted, translated into Spanish

From the blog called Taula’s Corner, a letter purportedly written by Steve Ditko, circa 1998. A scan of the letter, a transcript, and a Spanish translation are available.

I don’t get involved in evaluation and judging other people’s work. If the creator or producer, artist, etc., is honest with himself, he knows his weakness and strengths, where they are, what he needs to improve. If he’s not honest with himself he may not be willing or able to accept valid criticism. One has to be the sternest self-critic, more demanding than others so others become irrelevant in their opinions and criticism. By being a strong self-critic one will establish objective standards for his work.

The most important judgment is the one a person places on himself. He is the only one who he has to please. And at some level we know when were doing the best we can.

Thanks to the blog Con C De Arte, which also recently translated into Spanish the 1968 Ditko interview archived on our site.
