Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

When no one is surprised

OK, show of hands....

who here didn't know that the big bad guy was the Joker?

Aside from me mentioning him in this thread during the pre-production phase, he did infact appear in Episode 2

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/jokerearlyreveal.jpg

which has this shot superimposed in:

More about this latest episode soon...

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

Another short post for tonight...

It's easier to build a church than a carnival

A tale of what could have been; in early plans for the series, I wanted it to take place in Arkham Asylum.  I have this grand vision in my mind to one day build a dcdirect scale Arkham corridor lined with holding cells diorama and I thought that maybe  making it and a corresponding photoserial would be grand.  The rough story plan involved the Question and a questionably "cured" Harvey Dent trapped inside and fighting their way though the madness.

reality, space and budget intervened.

But if you look back to post #22 on page 1 of this thread, you'll note that I posted:

in other news about the current script, the following characters have been cut (I'm not saying if they had a major part, a little part or simply a cameo...but now you know they will not be appearing)
Harvy Dent
Scarecrow
the ghost of Amadeus Arkham

Now you get a little more idea of the evolution of the thought process.

So if Arkham was out, then I pondered what is another key Joker-type environment?  A demented carnival, like the one in Killing Joke!

And then you start getting logistical issues, like building a diorama that is supposed to represent a large outdoor area with visibility to horizons and such.  As well as all of the props needed to make a carnival, well, a carnival.  (I looked long and hard at mezco's "Dark Carnival" toys, which are out of scale, as well as the McFarlane-clive Barker Twisted Parade...which didn't have enough "stuff" to work with.

While I figured a main set piece would be inside a tent, I just knew I couldn't provide a good enough complete location or have the ability to pull off 100% digital backgrounds.

Carnival is out.

so I took the left field approach and built a church...or actually a chapel, which seems like something the old Q nemesis Reverend Hatch would have had added to Fermin's town Hall.
And the budget liked it since I didn't have to buy anything...the key items were the three stained glass windows which have been sitting in the "parts box" since they came with a McFarlane Ozzy Osborne figure years ago that I got on clearance since he came with so much stuff.

Like my other dioramas, this is built in a cardboard box, and the walls are covered with dollhouse mortar, which pretty much was like spreading cake frosting inside a box.  The windows are indeed actually set in so light shines through.

The rest of the Joker's stuff?  all courtesy of the afore mentioned parts box.  If you guys have a question about a particular item seen, let me know and I'll give the details.

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

When is a Door a Door?

The script calls for Vic to awake in a basement and head up stairs.

wow that sounds easy.

here is the series of pics needed to make that happen:

1)unmasked/no hat vic with midget in a "Lucas Simple" set
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/P1010461.jpg

2)exact same picture angle, but with Hat/mask combo on
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/P1010460.jpg

3)blending of the two photos so the hat is off and in hand (cut and pasted from another picture I forgot to resize for posting here), and the mask is on.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ch05p063.jpg

4)old door found by google (with elements of toy door merged on to match later image with door)
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/olddoor2.jpg

5)old door digitally added to darkened image.  Shadow effects are achieved by double layering the same image on top of one another with one being darkened grater than the other then selective transparency in streaks to allow the brighter pic to peek through selectively.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ch05p065.jpg

For the next frame, a simple set was used again with a very toy-esque door.  Elements of the old door were later merged on as a texture to make the door look like a door for the completed shot.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/P1010464.jpg

and behind the door...google found stairs
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/oldstairs1.jpg

But the real question is why did I go through all this just to establish a basement?...better ask the mayor again.  wink

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

Why do I feel like "I hate bald people" is a movie quote?!!! It's driving me crazy because I feel like I know exactly what context it's used in but I can't think of the film, or who was in it.

Of course I may be insane.

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

While it very well may have been used in a film...I wasn't quoting one. I also don't know of a film that uses that line, but that really doesn't mean there isn't one.

I'll be posting about ep 6 soon

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

Let's talk about S I X bay-bee, let's talk about U and me...

ok, I swear I won't do a musical title pun for a while after that one. tongue

I'm a little behind here, so let me throw a whole bunch of pictures at you and I'll explain as I go....

first up is a camera angle that I tried several dozen times with all different lighting schemes and variations which I just couldn't get to work to my liking.

This would have been used when the Joker was talking about God (panel 4)...
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/fullviewfor6.jpg
The line wrapping around the frame's final presented version "Believe in me and drink the wine" is from the theme song for the anime Ergo Proxy which I just got the soundtrack cd to and have been playing non-stop.

Backing up a little, here are the two photos composited together to make the slap action of panel 2 (I really wanted to do a gif animation, but it didn't happen)
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/slap1.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/slap2.jpg

Panels 6 and 7 featured the DCDirect golden age Joker bust, which I did some digital tweaks to...here's a clean shot
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/jokerbust.jpg

here are elements used for compositing panel 6:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/darkseid1.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/lexhead.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/zombiesoldier3.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/zombiesoldier5.jpg

The zombie soldiers were found in an online catalogue for lifesized props.  If I had the room, I would have squeezed these guys in too;

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/zombiesoldier6.jpg

Zombie Robin was completely made as a digital mock up (no actual physical custom)
Here are the componets:

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/zombierobin.jpg

Sorry I just kinda breezed through this one, but please feel free to ask a specific question or throw something out there for me to blabber about or expand upon.

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

STOP AND VIEW EPISODE 7 FIRST BEFORE READING THIS POST

qUESTION sANITY Episode 7

ok, all good?

let's proceed.....

Pulling back the screen to reveal the great Wizard of Oz

Normally I wait a day or so before posting the behind the scenes stuff, but I'm looking ahead to a crazy next 7 days, so I'm posting it now for you guys.

First off, I'm happy to have gotten beyond the range of Star Wars episode numbers, since when I say "episode 3" (for example) in my head, it is immediately followed by "Revenge of the Sith" like a gameshow contestant reaching for the buzzer.

So Episode 7 "Sinful Noir" big_smile
it doesn't have one of those cool Mr. A titles, nor the one originally planned, but things shifted a little for the better.

Here I'm going to give you a look at two completed frames which I later re-did as I locked down an artistic style that i liked better, though I do like the sketchy style of the second picture..

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/QSch07p01ALT.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/QSch07p03alt.jpg

Now here is why I wanted you guys to view the completed strip first...I'm about to either enhance you appreciation of it or ruin it completely by revealing all the original photographic elements unaltered and unfiltered.

The first city shot is the same one from the beginning of Episode 1 (the phantom me...DAMNIT!)

Panel 2:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ep7p1.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ep7p2.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ep7p3.jpg

The Question custom was inspired by Iron-Cow and uses a DCSH Clark Kent body, but rather than give him a new head I found that the DC Direct hat/mask combo fits like a glove.  and since Vic doesn't get his damn-fine coat back till the end, I didn't custom him up one like Mr. Cow did for his masterpiece.

Panel 3:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ep7p4.jpg

Panel 4:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ep7p5.jpg
And for some reason I felt the need to add the Zatanna tour poster to the back wall.

Panel 5:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ep7p6.jpg

Panel 6:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ep7p7.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ep7p8.jpg

Panel 7:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ep7p9.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ep7p91.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/ep7p92.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/harleycompositebw.jpg

Panel 8 is a re-working of a wallpaper shot I did as a teaser for this series and uses a Question Custom made from a Sin City Hartigan figure.

I'll be around to answer any all questions, so feel free to fire away!

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

What is reality?

Here's a look at the photographic elements that went into the making of episode 8...

panel 1 is a filtered version of the JLU question's quarters "i know" poster provided on this very site by Eric on a brick backdrop

Panel 2: a William B Davis head from a stargate figure temporally on a DCSH Kent body (the same body as the Q figure)
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/QS08M1.jpg

panel 3: a direct head shot.  the cigarette will be digitally drawn in later.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/QS08M2.jpg

Panel 4: a Star Gate figure's boots (the final version of this pic was flipped for aesthetics and s#!t applied digitally)
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/QS08m3.jpg

panel 5 & 6: same star gate figure

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/j3h/DC%20Direct/Question%20Sanity/qs08m5.jpg

panel 7: sequence of shots to show the erasing of the face (which really would be easier to do AFTER the filtering since it's all white, but why do things quickly?)

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

ugh...
I'm really sorry to announce this,
But Question Sanity episode 9 is going to be late.

Real world issues have come up which have taken away the free time I had planned to be able to work on it at the beginning of this week.

I am hoping to be able to have it posted on this saturday, and then episode 10 will be scheduled to be two wednsdays later (a week and a half later)

Hopfully this will be my only unplanned delay...but I'm already making the "All Star Question Sanity" jokes.

Again, sorry guys....but if you thought episode 8 was weird, 9 is even more bizzare.

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

Thanks ?

No it's nothing serious, just a major shift in the job schedule and a unplanned two and a half day meeting which ends up leaving me going 9 days straight with no off day or free evening to dedicate quality time to the story.

I started to try to rush it, but I felt it was better to blow the deadline than to spit out something I felt was not given my all.

Now that I have all off thurs and friday to work on the series, I better not blow it by looking at all the news online coming out of Comic con.roll

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

Late and still tripp'n on Joker Gas,
