Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

click image for full size version
http://www.vicsage.com/mig2/teaserad.jpg

If you've been peeking in the custom's thread, you knew this was coming smile

I've been talking with Eric about not only making vicsage.com this upcoming serial's host and home, but making it into a site event as well.

I'm going to use this newly created thread to post news and updates about the creative process and progress, as well as stir up some interaction and opinions from you guys.

The serial is expected to debut in the first quarter of 2007, but coming in the very near future will be a contest to help name this new serial (Question Sanity is what I've been using as a working title).  More details soon...

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

Name that serial contest:

I’ve been developing this project with a working title of “Question Sanity”, which while it has grown on me, I feel it is lacking in the coolness factor.

I admit, it is going to be tough for someone to come up with a title for something they haven’t read, but let me give you a few bullet points to help the creative progress along.

1)It features Vic Sage, The Question, as the serial’s star (duh)

2)The story is going to be psychological and deal with different philosophies

3)There is going to be a minor amount of magic involved

4)While there will be some action, I don’t expect this to be any more “action orientated” than my previous serial, Murder in Gotham (Action Figures fighting one another in lenghty drawn out sequences can look really silly at times and be a disservice to the story)

5)There will definitely be some wit and snappy dialogue exchanges, but it is not a humorous tale.

6)My version of the Question is an amalgamation of most of the previous ways he has been written at DC comics…he has the intelligence and some of the conspiracy theorist traits of the JLU Q.  He has some of the Zen nature of the O’neil series.  He has some of the wit of the 52 Q. and he has the introspectiveness of the mini-series Q.  I have not read L.A.W., nor do I think I want to.

7)“Going Inside” and “Walking in Two worlds” (though whether that is a power or a deeper state of mind is left intentionally up to interpretation) play very big parts.

8)President Lex Luthor may or may not have a part.

9)The Joker may or may not have a part (but looking at the teaser pretty much says he does, doesn’t it?)

10)There will be two other heroes directly involved in the story, one of whom recently had a controversial custom figure made…I would classify their parts as “supporting roles”

11)IF Batman appears in this story, it would be no more than a cameo.

12)The serial starts in Hub City, but Q will not remain there.  He will not be returning to Gotham.

13)This serial is not going to be structured like how Murder in Gotham was (meaning it is not going to be “Here’s a situation and here are a bunch of possibilities there here is the path to the solution”)…This serial is a linear story.

14)There are going to be some…unusual…cameos, thanks to questioning one's sanity.

15)I’m looking for a title that will look and sound good as a straight forward Sig to help advertise the serial.

Eric and I are still working out contest rules and such….but I’m pretty much figuring it going to be Post as often and as many as you can think of here…and that’s about it other than keep the language clean.

Dead line is January 31st 2007.

Eric and I will decide which is best, and that person will have their title used and credited to them.  This photo serial will be featured somewhere on the site (as possibly will this contest...hey Eric, Can it get a news blurb and a link back to here?), so the winner will get some good bragging rights.
UPDATE: SEE NEXT POST FOR ADDITIONAL PRIZE INFO

I’m hoping this will start a bunch of fan fics or projects of various media which can be presented on this site, since we all want one thing…more tales of the Question.

Thanks, and get titling…

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

Since I'm asking you guys and gals to come up with a title to this story,
Since you are contributing to the creative process,
I feel you should get something from the story...

The winner who comes up with the title for this serial will get one of the custom figures used in the story!

At this point, I am not going to reveal which character figure the winner will receive (I did reveal it to Eric though), but I will say it is an original character created for this story (so, no, it's not The Question, sorry) and the character has more than just a cameo appearance.

In the event that there are not enough entries, or a lack of suitable titles, the figure will be given away by random drawing of those who did submit at least one title.

The figure will not be sent out till the end of the serial is posted.

Any Questions?

"When the stars drew down their spears..."

A nice turn on Blake! But....

"The Final Answer"

This makes me think of "The Final Solution," which is never a good thing.

Indeed, I was actually thinking of the Holmes story, but I can understand the connotations.

Oh, and honestly, I actually like the title "Question Sanity". It might not have the same sort of appeal as something like "Fearful Symmetry", but it does it's job and it's pretty interesting.

I don't think I can come up with something cooler than "Question Sanity"
"Aporia", maybe? But then the story would have to deal with getting lost and finding your way out. Anyway that's a title I wanted to use myself sometime  lol

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

Keep the suggestions coming!  Quite a few interesting ones have been posted, and I want to see more big_smile

To give you folks a progress update, the first four parts are 100% completely scripted.  At this point it is outlined to run 16 parts...but I guarnetee that when it gets to the full script stage, it will snowball to around 20 parts (As with Murder in Gotham, I'm sure the outline ending will expand to being three actual script chapters)

I just scripted my first "You got no face!?!" moment  (the exchange is in part 3)  8)

my goal is to have the script 100% done by new years and start shooting in Jan.

I want to have a few chapters complete before starting to post them, so I can release them on a regular set schedule and keep well ahead of the deadlines.

Judging by the way he's dressed, there was apparantly a Matt Skiba figure released that nobody told me about.  lol

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

The black suited figures (Vic and Lex) are made from mezco's reservoir dogs line.  Those figure's bodies are in scale with DC direct, but the original heads and hands (which are the ones in question that I'm not happy about) are cartoonly oversized and very pink.  I painted the red shirt to match the Matt Wagner art in the gallery here.

I don't remember which "Mr. Color" body was used to make which figure, but Lex got the only one with a buttoned jacket. (Harvey Keitel?)

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

It's time for an update and an announcement:

First I want to thank everyone who submitted titles to this thread and after some long hard thinking, I decided that the photo serial will be titled…

Question Sanity

"HEY!"  you say...

It grew on me quite a bit as time and writing went on, plus just about everyone who posted suggestions stated that they liked it as well.

But, there is a winner, and that winner’s title(s) will be used!

“Huh!?!” You say.

I’m going to be using the winning contest entries as chapter titles, with full credit issued.  So everyone put your hands together for

Mr. A !!!

Aside from the sheer quantity of suggestions, the quality of which was something I could not deny use of.

As of the script’s second draft, the break downs are such (and subject to change):

Part 1: “Keichu's Wheel” (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

Part 2: "Form of the Formless" (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

Part 3: "The Strange Case of V. Sage." (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

Part 4: "I walk a lonely road..." (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

Part 5: "Quaere verum" (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

Part 6: “The things children say these days”

Part 7: “The long hard road out of Hell”

Part 8: “Anger leads to hate, Hate leads to suffering”

Part 9: "Crossroads" (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

Part 10: "When the stars drew down their spears..." (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

Part 11: "In the Furnace of thy Brain" (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

Part 12: “I believe in magic”

Part 13: “Mirror Image” (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

Part 14: **spoiler protected** NOTE: it is not a submitted title

Part 15: "Shadow of a doubt" (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

Part 16: "Inner Echo" (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

Part 17: "Without an Answer" (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

Part 18: "The Final Answer" (Title by vicsage.com forum member Mr. A)

As his Prize, Mr. A will be receiving one of the custom figures of an original character from this photo-serial (when it is all completed…sorry to make you wait)
So do I reveal that character now? Or do I make Mr. A wait?  smile
And if I do reveal now, do I reveal just the name or a picture??  big_smile

in other news about the current script, the following characters have been cut (I'm not saying if they had a major part, a little part or simply a cameo...but now you know they will not be appearing)
Harvy Dent
Scarecrow
the ghost of Amadeus Arkham

That just tells you nothing, right

Dum dum dummmm. I have it indeed, and all I can say is...I think this is going to trump Murder in Gotham by about one million percent.

I'll have to e-mail you tomorrow, J. I'm currently helping the wife put together her CV. If you don't hear back from me, keep bugging me.

Re: Question Sanity - preproduction and behind the scenes

ok...so March is looking like May.  But that's ok, I think you guys will be happy with the way things have shaped up and with what I have planned.

I've changed the name of this thread since when the weekly serial launches, this thread will be used to show and discuss behind the scenes details and stuff.

I've been keeping an archive of material to present here, so hopefully this will be almost as interesting to you guys as Question Sanity itself.
