The O Sensei receives a visit in 1900 from his wife and some agents of her father. The wife comes to beg her husband to come home. The other men come to bring him home whatever his answer. O Sensei slaughters the men effortlessly, but promises his wife that one day his bones with rest with hers.
Lady Shiva meets with the Batman, to ask him to gather together Green Arrow and the Question to fulfill their favor to the O Sensei. Meanwhile, in Hub City, Jake starts wondering about the safe he was cracking under the Fermin mansion before it burned down. He decides to find Vic Sage, whom he suspects to be the Question.
Sage, at the home of Tot Rodor, questions whether he'll ever discover his true lineage. Tot works in the meantime, to fix up the costume and the mechanism for the change into the Question. As Vic changes, Jake and some thugs show up at the door, threatening Tot's life unless the Question accompanies them to the scene of the fire to collect the money.
Jake has the Question open the safe (after first pushing aside the body of Jeremiah Hatch) when they get there and is counting the cash when Lady Shiva arrives. She disarms the other thugs and tells the Question and Tot to leave while she settles the score with Jake. She tosses Jake a gun, but before he can use it, she snaps his neck. She tosses a torch into the safe, burning the money.
Shiva takes the Question to a place where O Sensei, Batman and Green Arrow are gathered around a campfire. She tells the story of how O Sensei's in-laws made more attempts on his life, and failing, they fled the country scared. Only Batman has learned where they re-located: a small island off the coast of Malaya.
Sage talks to Batman away from the rest. He tells him he feels useless in this bunch, and Batman tells him to prove himself. Unlike the others, O Sensei hasn't offered a parable for Sage. Arrow, Shiva, O Sensei and Vic board a boat bound for the island, after fighting off an ambush at the dock. The waters are high and choppy due to a storm, but the motley crew pushes onward.
Shiva tells Sage to put on his mask, so that if he dies, he dies as his true self. The boat capsizes, and Sage swims after the O Sensei, but fails to bring him back. Green Arrow pulls Sage from the current and they wash up on the beach. Shiva is there, but O Sensei is lost.
Sage's curiosity pushes him to visit the burial site of O Sensei's wife, but they find that she's not there either. Sage goes home, remembering the last words of the O Sensei before he went under: "Some parables are silent."
Sage receives a package later from Batman, telling of the final resting places of O Sensei's wife: the boat carrying her family's goods and her remains went down in the same waters where the O Sensei was lost.
